The puppy who made a friend for life!
It was the middle of July when we brought Walter home from the shelter. He was an affectionate Golden Retriever puppy who we knew would make the perfect addition to our family.
We were aware that it would take some time for Jet, our tabby cat, to get used to a new family member, but we hadn’t anticipated the amount of trouble Walter’s arrival would cause.
Jet, once a playful cat, had become frequently irritated and was always on edge. Jet began to release his aggression on Walter and the young children in the neighborhood.
Sadly, Walter’s arrival had brought out Jet’s possessive side. Although Walter’s compassionate personality allowed him to gain almost anyone’s affection, he was unable to get Jet to trust him.
One rainy afternoon, Walter was lounging on the cool kitchen tiles while Jet was maintaining his distance and sitting by the front door. I was just finishing up the dishes when I heard the doorbell ring.
I rushed to the door and opened it while still drying my hands on my apron. I noticed a small package that I had been expecting placed on the doormat.
As I bent down to pick up the package, a rumble of thunder erupted from behind the dark clouds that had been lining the sky on that gloomy day.
Instinctively, Jet panicked and ran through my legs and right out the front door. I watched in horror as Jet sprinted across the yard and onto the street with terror filling his eyes.
Within seconds, I heard the sound of an approaching vehicle. I gasped as I saw the car quickly getting to Jet, who was now frozen in the middle of the street.
I ran towards Jet as fast as my legs could carry me and braced myself for what was about to happen. The car was milliseconds away from getting to Jet and the driver showed no signs of slowing down or stopping.
Just when I had lost hope, I saw a flash of light-colored fur bolt past me. It was from Walter! Walter reached the spot where Jet was frozen and pulled his unmoving body from the path of the truck.
Walter had saved Jet’s life. Seconds later, I saw realization fill Jet’s eyes as he shook with fright and looked around to see where the car had gone.
I hastily brought both Walter and Jet inside and dried them off. Walter went back to lounging on the kitchen floor, completely unaware of the fact that he was a hero. Over the next few days, Jet approached Walter slowly to touch his paws and play with his tail.
Day by day, Walter and Jet began following each other around and sleeping together every night. Now, I wasn’t sure if Walter understood what he had done for Jet, but I was sure Jet knew that Walter had saved his life.
Walter had found a place in Jet’s heart. And from then on, Walter and Jet became the best of friends.
